Growing up in an Italian household, I was raised with food being an integral part of our lives. Every special occasion, celebration, holiday and family event was cultivated around the food. In our culture, food was a way to show the ones we love how much we cared about them by preparing meals and desserts that came from the heart. Even simple family “Sunday Dinners” were just as important and special as any other event. My family would take great pride in preparing meals that would celebrate and honor their beautiful and growing family. Sharing, teaching, giving us love, wisdom and culture through recipes that had been passed down from generation to generation…. And now, I want to share that with you. I always loved the comforting aroma of homemade sauce simmering on the stove, potatoes and chicken and root vegetables roasting in the oven. The aromatic scent of herbs, garlic, and white wine all came together in a symphony for the senses as we excitedly awaited the meal to come… which was always complimented by my mother’s incredible desserts. We anxiously awaited as we gathered boastfully to help clear the table and prepare for the display of sugar laden love on a plate.
Classic Italian Cookies such as biscotti, lemon drops and Amaretti were always a hit. Mom also created delicious “American Classics” (which we all loved) such as chocolate chip cookies, pound cakes, and fudge brownies. NY Style or Ricotta cheesecakes, profiteroles, layer cakes, Zuppa Inglese, rice pudding, tiramisu and more. These delectable treats gave new meaning to “there’s always room for dessert.” In our house, often times, we said, “better make room for dessert!!” ;) Holidays were extra special as we all created traditional and special pastries such as Struffoli (honey balls), pasticelle (chocolate and chesnut filled fritters) and Easter Ricotta and rice pies. As the years have passed we all continue to enjoy the sweetest life through the excitement and pleasure of the senses… and a lot of cookies;) Being with my family around the table was (and still is) an experience that created the most delicious memories of my life.
I am blessed to work with my family in our restaurant business as a baker and dessert creator. As I have evolved in my own life through health, exercise, yoga and mindfulness practices I began to find a quietness and a stillness that led and pulled me deeper into a journey of self study and inner transformation. I found a sweet, sacred space of peace…. of love, connection, compassion, gratitude, serenity, service and bliss. I decided that I wanted to feel this joy and bliss as much as I possibly could. I began to become aware of, and focus on what aligned me with that feeling, and giving less attention to the things that didn’t.
Baking gave me an energetic joyful feeling that on many occasions had me dancing around my kitchen in a state of happiness and creative flow—and my yoga would do the same… while opening my heart up more allowing me to be fully present in the creative process of my desserts….and of myself. So it is with great honor and gratitude that I have combined my two passions while in the company of my loving family. I invite you to enjoy every blissful bite of my creations made just for you. elevate me into a state of peaceful, meditative and powerful flow, while my beloved Yin practice guided me into that quiet space that connected me to my Source. I would smile from the inside knowing that our ultimate purpose in life was to love others as we love ourselves. That we are the messengers of love as we move through our own evolution of self love and healing. I remembered that one of the ways that I received love and offered it to others was by offering a dessert that was created through the heart. I came to a realization that these were the practices that gave me the greatest joy and bliss that I wanted to hang onto as much as possible. I was always kinder, happier and nicer to everyone around me. I would give freely, compliment a stranger and begin to smile more and more even when no one was around…. I would be filled with gratitude and laughter.
Today, I get so excited to prepare a dessert that someone requested in celebration of their special event, such as celebrating their child’s first birthday, a bridal shower to celebrate the union of two people in love, a 90th birthday celebration for grandparents whose family will keep them alive in their hearts forever…. I was the one who was selected to create for them. When any of my customers, family or friends walk into my kitchen, I am always making them taste new creations…. My staff members are happy to know that part of their job description is taste testing for me;) I am truly honored and grateful to serve.
